LPAs: “What if I change address?”

A question I am asked often by LPA clients is “what if I change address?” This blog summarises the changes you need to report to the Office of the Public Guardian and provides the links to contact the team.

Changes you must report

Changes to an LPA can be made by you (the donor) if you still have mental capacity or by your attorney(s) if:

·         you or an attorney have a change in name

·         you or an attorney change address

·         an attorney dies

What to do if you or an attorney change name

If you or an attorney change name you must inform the Office of the Public Guardian of any name changes and send a copy of either the marriage certificate or deed poll that shows the new name. You must send a copy, not any original documents.

What to do if you or an attorney change your name or address

If you or an attorney change address you simply need to inform the Office of the Public Guardian, you don’t need to send any supporting evidence or documentation.

What to do if one of your attorneys die

If one of your attorneys dies you must tell the Office of the Public Guardian and send them:

·         the original LPA

·         any certified copies of the LPA

·         a return address so the Office of the Public Guardian can send the documents back to you

If the donor or attorney died outside of the United Kingdom, you must also send a copy of the death certificate.

The information to include if you email or write to the Office of the Public Guardian:           

• your full name, address and date of birth

• whether you are the attorney or the donor

• the donor’s full name address and date of birth (if you are the attorney)

• the reference number on your LPA
